Lesson activities
Students spent time brainstorming different events and people who have made a difference in their lives. Then the students expanded this brainstorming activity into difficult times within history and the actions that were taken. The brainstorming activity expanded into violent and non-violent means and the people who took these actions. Now knowledgeable about how to make a non-violent difference the students then created either a propaganda poster, comic strip, skit, or advertisement (poem/rap) portraying a modern problem in the world that should be changed and how it can be changed. The students throughout the week will then add their own comments, famous people's names, and quotes to the "Wall of Difference."  Worksheet in PDF format.
Conclusion/comments
This lesson is very generic and can be adapted to many different areas of study. It is easy to turn the focus onto different instances, movements, or people in history who have made a difference. I also think it is a great way for students to understand that ordinary people can make a difference.
Evaluation
The students will be graded on their projects (posters, skits, etc). A very general rubric that scores problem, solution (non-violent means), persuasiveness, and creativity will be used.
